One of many brilliant concerts at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 6-14, 2012
Delron 3030 The alternative hip-hop world has been pining for more Deltron 3030, but no more! The super-trio made up of famed producer Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, Canadian-born DJ Kid Koala, and oddball rapper Del the Funky Homosapien debuted their collaboration in 2000 with**Deltron 3030**. There were no holds barred with the strange and satisfying concept album, which followed the narrative of Deltron Zero (Del) a superhero in the year 3030. The record balanced its apocalyptic, atmospheric vibes with Del’s signature funk-laced delivery and even sampled the likes of French classical composer William Sheller. That morsel of heavy-hitting futuristic groove was enough to whet the palates of critics and music lovers alike. The threesome has since contributed to the multimillion selling debut record from alternative virtual band The Gorillaz, but has left a release for **Deltron 3030**’s follow up looming. And If the anticipation for this album is killing you too, wait until you hear what Del has in store for Halifax: one full choir and complete horn session will be joining everyone. The magnitude of sound is not to be missed.
Maestro Fresh Wes Wes Williams AKA Maestro Fresh Wes is a man of many hats, but just one crown. He is a poet, rapper, author, actor, public speaker, visionary, and the king of Canadian hip-hop. Williams began blazing the trail in 1989 with his gold-selling, dance-floor igniting "Let Your Backbone Slide," making him the first Canadian rapper to have a top 40 single. He has since released seven albums, won two JUNOs, and managed to hold onto his old school groove all the while evolving his style as a rapper. His next release is slated to be chock-full of collaborations of all genres, with Shad, Classified, and The Trews chiming in, along with powerhouse soprano Measha Brueggergosman who will join Williams for his first ever opera-inspired track. And undoubtedly, 23 years after releasing his platinum debut album **Symphony in Effect**, with this pending record Maestro Fresh Wes will once again innovate and influence like a boss.
WijeratneWorks featuring Scratch Bastid Described by the Toronto Star as "an artist who reflects a positive vision of our culture's future," the award-winning composer-conductor-pianist Dinuk Wijeratne returns to the TD Halifax Jazz Festival this year to debut a brand new project. He is joined by the brilliant young vocalist Reeny Smith, master drummer Dave Burton, and special guest Skratch Bastid - truly one of the world's great turntablists. With this new project's music, Wijeratne ventures into uncharted electro-acoustic territory following a succession of acclaimed large-scale all-acoustic pieces, such as the Tabla Concerto, Qawwali Party, and Brazil, January 1, 1502. The common thread, however, is an ongoing search for that mysterious line between composition and improvisation, and an ability to bring into synthesis a multitude of cultural influences. Techno, Hip Hop, Jazz, Indian and Latin music, are all presented as a live and pre-made hotpot of bite-sized samples: percussion loops, ancient poetry, hymns, Tabla music, strains of a Schubert string quartet....and even some vintage Sherlock Holmes. Stay tuned.
